Arctic Edge Family Night
Family Night last night was great! The kids and their parents joined us as Pastor Jonathan presented the message of Salvation. Then we watched a powerpoint presentation of pictures from this week. Then the kids by class sang songs, recited memory versesthey learned from the week, and then enjoyed cookies and drink. We had a total of 80 enrolled this year with 8 professions of faith! Today is the last day and the kids will be learning that by listening to God, they can have courage to tell others about Jesus (Acts:1-21). Barbara Buker is our VBS Director and has done a wonderful job coordinating and overseeing VBS this week. I know that God has been glorified and many seeds have been planted in the hearts of the kids that were intrusted to us this week through the teachers that have served and the youth that have helped.

Book Review: Humility: True Greatness by C.J. Mahaney
How to Weaken Pride and Cultivate Humility (pg. 171-172)
- (Always)Reflect on the wonder of the cross of Christ.
- Begin your day by acknowledging your dependence upon God and your need for God.
- Begin your day expressing gratitude to God
- Practice the spiritual disciplines - prayer, study of God's Word, worship. Do this consistently each day and at the day's outset, if possible.
- Seize your commute time to memorize and meditate on Scripture.
- Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.
- At the end of the day, transfer the glory to God.
- Before going to sleep, receive this gift of sleep from God and acknowledge His purpose for sleep.
- Study the attributes of God.
- Study the doctrines of grace.
- Study the doctrine of sin.
- Play golf as much as possible.
- Laugh often, and laugh often at yourself.
- Identify evidences of grace in others.
- Encourage and serve others each and every day.
- Invite and pursue correction.
- Respond humbly to trials.
Martyn Lylod-Jones wrote the following about the surest way to pursue humility: There is only one thing I know of that crushes me to the ground and humiliates me to the dust, and that is to look at the Son of God, and especially contemplate the cross.
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Nothing else can do it. When I see that I am a sinner. . . that nothing but the Son of God on the cross can save me, I'm humbled to the dust. . . Nothing but the cross can give us this spirit of humility. (pg.66)
The Arctic Adventure

Today we started our Arctic Adventure! No, the kids and I are not vacationing in the arctic. However, the kids at Vacation Bible School are trekking north with us to the Arctic Edge: Where Adventure Meets Courage. Based on Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." ,they will test their limits in the frozen frontier (although in South Florida it's hard to pretend it's arctic weather) and they will gain courage to follow Jesus in the everyday challenge of their lives. Today's lesson was based on 1 Kings 18:1-2, 17-39, where the kids learned that by knowing God, they can have the courage to show others that the Lord is God. This is the week that I always look forward to every year. This is a great outreach for our church and it's wonderful seeing these children with wonder and excitement in their eyes as they learn about Jesus. David has been helping with Vacation Bible School since he has been in our church youth group. This year he is helping co-teach the 3rd grade and doing skits during the Worship Rally. He will also prepare the PowerPoint presentation for Family Night on Thursday. He stays busy all week and loves every minute of it.

Reflections
Today all the staff along with their spouses & children went to the Clewiston Inn for a Staff Lunch. It will be our last Staff Lunch together with the Bridges. As we enjoyed our meal together, we shared about the times God has blessed us with over the past 3 years. We laughed at the funny things we remembered that have happened while Tim has been our Pastor and Administrator. When God called Tim and Krisy to First Baptist Church I was the only staff member other than a former custodian. Jonathan & Tommy came after Tim. After lunch today I did some reflecting of my own concerning Tim and his ministry at First Baptist Church. In a short time after they came our family grew to love them. Through their ministry and friendship we have learned so much. It is seldom these days to see a young couple that love the Lord the way they do. It is one of the first things you come to know about them as you develop a relationship with them. They have been through surgeries, illnesses, and family problems with us and prayed for us unfailingly. As I reflected on our time together I recall their service and their wisdom. There isn't enough words to describe what they mean to us. If I have learned nothing else from the Bridges it is this " But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." (Galatians 6:14). For I have seen them live this verse out in their lives. Then I think of the laughter, oh the laughter! So many times Pastors are thought of as serious, stanch, etc. But Tim proved that Pastors can be pastors and still laugh and have a good time.Tuesday, May 30, 2006

Farewell
Glen and Mary Pridgen graciously opened their home to the Deacons and their wives along with the staff of our church tonight to say farewell to Pastor Tim, Krisy and Delaney Bridges. Glen prepared a "country boil" that consisted of shrimp, sausage, potatoes, onions and corn on the cob. As with any Baptist gathering the food was outstanding and the fellowship was sweet. Pastor Tim and his family are moving to Edinburgh, Scotland where Tim will puruse his PhD. It is with mixed emotions that we say farewell to them next Sunday for the last time. It's exciting to see them follow the Lord's leadership in their lives yet at the same time we will miss their ministry and friendship. This past Sunday night the church held a Dinner on the Grounds in their honor. Several of our deacons and our youth pastor shared how they have touched the lives of our church. Bob Buker said it best when he said "I'm not going to talk about you (referring to Tim) because that is not what you would want, because it's evident in your lives that it's not about you it's about the Lord." We are forever thankful that the Lord brought them to First Baptist Church and placed them in our lives.

Angela's New Fashion Accessory
Youth Cake Auction
Prior to the auction, the youth group helped prepared dinner and set tables for Wednesday Night Dinner. This allowed them to get some community hours (they need a total of 40) needed to go on the mission trip. Following the dinner the auction was held. Angela's cake was auctioned off for $25.01. She said there was a chocolate cake that went for $130.
I didn't get any pictures of her cake before taking it be auctioned off, but David happened to take one of her mixing it up!

Being an Encourager
While James warns that our words can cause great destruction, they can also spark growth and motivation. James 1:6 states, "the tongue [the words we speak] sets on fire the course of our lives." As mothers, our words have the power to change the entire direction of a child's life! What an awesome gift we can give.

Grasping Pride
I have currently started reading Humility: True Greatness by C.J. Mahaney. I have wanted to read this book since a friend of mine read it a couple of months ago. Although I am just beginning the book I have already come to realize that in order to be humble I must first grasp what it means to be proud. If you are like me, you will not readily admit to being proud or prideful. As Mahaney points out "none of us are immune to the logic-defying, blinding effects of pride. Though it shows up in different forms and to differing degrees, it infects us all. It's not if pride exists in my heart; it's where pride exists and how pride is being expressed in my life. But what exactly is pride. Mahaney explains it like this,"Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence upon Him." Talk about stepping on toes, more like stomped on them and twisted on top of them . Ouch! . "Pride", John Stott writes, "is more than the first of the seven deadly sins; it is itself the essence of all sin." Jonathan Edwards called pride "the worst viper that is in the heart" and "the greatest disturber of the soul's peace and sweet communion with Christ." Edwards also ranked pride as the most difficult sin to overcome and "the most hidden, secret and deceitful of all lusts."Proverbs 8:13 says: "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate." Why does God hate pride? Mahaney explains it like this,"Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence upon Him." John Calvin wrote, "God cannot bear with seeing his glory appropriated by the creature in even the smallest degree, so intolerable to him is the sacrilegious arrogance of those who, by praising themselves, obscure his glory as far as they can." There are numerous warnings from Scripture about pride and through these scriptures we can find an expression of God's mercy that is intended to lead us to the path of humility. Mahaney points out that true greatness as biblically defined is serving others for the glory of God.
As I've read the first 59 pages of this book I have reason to be discouraged and to stop reading, but even more I have reason to be encouraged to finish reading this book because I know and believe "the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." For there is motivation and purpose to be found in humility. We only have to read Isaiah 66:1-2; Thus says the LORD:" Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. " But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

Book Review: Becoming a Titus 2 Woman
"Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God." Softly and Tenderly
These scriptures, along with others, came to mind last night as I learned of the tradegy that took place in my sister-in-law's family. Though I nor that family can comprehend why something like this happened I rest in the knowledge that My Savior, the one that creates life and holds it in His hand, knows why and has a purpose for each event that takes place in our lives. That same God is the God that can turn our weeping into joy. I pray that this family will find comfort in the days to come and for the family members that do not know Christ, I pray that they would call out to Him now. For there is nothing too small or horrible that you can't bring to Jesus. He desires to have a relationship with you.
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me;
See, on the portals He's waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.
Come home, come home,
Ye who are weary come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?
Time is now fleeting the moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, death-beds are coming,
Coming for you and for me.
Oh! for the wonderful love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me;
Tho' we have sinned He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

Edifying Words
One chapter in particular has really struck me. Chapter 4 is entitled "Her Character" in which Peace considers three characteristics of the Titus 2 woman. "Older women likewise are to reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored".
The first characteristic that Peace speaks of that struck me was how we are to guard our words carefully. 1 Timothy 3:11 says, "Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things." Now there is nothing wrong with talking but too often we forget to guard our words and as I have heard said, "what comes up comes out." Too many times I have not thought about what was about to come out of my mouth and the result was that I ended up offending someone. Peace points out that the biblical criteria for the words I speak should be: to speak edifying words, speak truthful words, and speak good repute words.
Edifying Words: These words build up others. Such words are honoring to God and have an eternal purpose and worth. When speaking to anyone our desire should be to help the other person be like Christ.
Truthful Words: It is not an uncommon occurance today for people to lie. And sadly it is accepted in the world today. There are times when we aren't intentionally lying, but by omitting a part of a story or by being deceitful in some other way we are in essence lying. It is so easy to fall into the trap of gossip or even telling a downright lie. Peace cautions that even when we are telling the truth, we can still be gossiping and painting the other person in a bad light.
Good Repute Words: These words do not lead to slander and gossip. In fact they think of the other person's reputation. If it's something that will make them look bad, then go to them in private and speak to them about it. And don't go with that "holier than thou" attitude either. Be gentle and loving, but at the same time truthful, clear, and straight forward. Give them hope not despair.
I love the advice from Peace and her honesty within this chapter. The easiest way to speak edifying words, truthful words, and good repute words is simply by not talking too much! If we talk long enough we are eventually going to say something we shouldn't be saying. This is where I need to do some serious work. . . keeping my mouth shut!

When I'm an Old Lady
And bring so much happiness...just as they did.
I want to pay back all the joy they've provided.
Returning each deed! Oh, they'll be so excited!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids
'll write on the wall with reds, whites and blues,
And I'll bounce on the furniture...wearing my shoes.
I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out.
I'll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they'll shout!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids
When they're on the phone and just out of reach,
I'll get into things like sugar and bleach.
Oh, they'll snap their fingers and then shake their head,
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids
When they cook dinner and call me to eat,
I'll not eat my green beans or salad or meat,
I'll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table,
And when they get angry...I'll run...if I'm able!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids
I'll sit close to the TV, through the channels I'll click,
I'll cross both eyes just to see if they stick.
I'll take off my socks and throw one away,
And play in the mud 'til the end of the day!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids
And later in bed, I'll lay back and sigh,
I'll thank God in prayer and then close my eyes.
My kids will look down with a smile slowly creeping,
And say with a groan, "She's so sweet when she's sleeping!"

Moving Day Has Arrived
It is a bittersweet time for the kids and I. We are going to miss having family in town, but know that they will be happy in Tallahassee. Especially my parents since they will be back in the area they have lived their entire life. When I called Daddy today to see how they were doing they were at my uncle and aunt's house visiting them and then they were going by to see a member of the church before going by to my brother's house. I could tell by the sound of my dad's voice that they were happy to be home again where they are able to go see old friends, relatives and go to church where they have been members for over 20 years. Even knowing all of them will be so happy, we still miss them already!

Play Ball!
Softball season has officially started. Her teamed traveled to Moore Haven last night for their first game. Angela was short stop for 5 innings and finished the game pitching. She was 4 for 3 but unfortunately was stranded on base each time. Last night was the first inning she has ever pitched. She walked more batters than she struck out but with practice I'm sure she was get the hang of it. Their team lost 12-3. This week and the weeks to follow will be consumed with softball and baseball as we will not only be supporting her during her games, but will be supporting Beau, Jeri Lynne, and Brock as they play their games. I forgot to take my camera to any of the games this week but promise to post pictures of future games.Thursday, April 06, 2006

Examples Must Precede our Instruction
"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." ~Proverbs 22:6Thing about this scripture from J.C. Ryle's perspective: "Your children will seldom learn habits which they see you despise, or walk in paths which you do not walk yourself. [She] that preaches to [her] children what she does not practice, is working a work that never goes forward."
In other words, practice what we preach to our children (and others). Whether we care to admit it or not we are the ones [mothers] that have the greatest influence on our children. How can we expect our children to walk in the light if we ourselves are walking in darkness. It's not someone else job to train them, God has commanded us to be the trainer. Not only does he command us in Proverbs to do so, but in Philippians 3:17, "Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. "
To borrow a quote from Carolyn Mahaney - “Let us grab our children by the hand and say to them; come, follow me into the riches of the gospel of Jesus Christ."Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

No Mistake
Make no mistake about it, God doesn't make mistakes. In fact, as I was reading "Girl Talk" yesterday Carolyn Mahaney referred to scripture that I have read many times and never thought about it in this context. Psalm 139:16 says, " Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them." This passage tells me that even before my children (or myself for that matter) were formed God knew whom their parents would be. He ordained it! It was his desire that I'm David and Angela's mom. This is also confirmed in Acts 17:26 "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings . . ." The family we were placed in was prearranged by God before creation was! God knew exactly what he was doing when he placed them in my care. He set it up and he will guide me to raise them. They are his perfect choice for me. God has ordained our relationship.

My Thoughts: Stop Dating the Church
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. - Ephesians 5:22-32For sometime now I have struggled with my commitment to the church, hence the reason I purchased this book. Through this book Harris challenges Christian community to stop dating the church and to become committed. Throughout the book Harris speaks about having a passion for the church and explains that when we, as believers, don't have a passion and commitment to the church we being cheated out of God's best for ourselves, the church and the world. Harris speaks of why we need the local Church and shows what passion in action looks like. This was something that was like a slap in the face, making me say, "that's me. I've lost the passion." His illustration of what passion in action looks like was when someone is passionate about an organization or club, they do a number of things: they join, make it a priority, find ways to serve, give, connect with people and they share their passion with others. This is what passion for the church should be. Harris also gives a wonderful explanation of the church of heaven's perspective from Ephesians 5:22- 33. He then gives a helpful and practical list of ten things that matter in a church. All ten things point to a church that is Christ centered. In the same chapter he talks about when it's time to find a new church home. Harris also gives advice on how to make the most out of Sunday by preparing our hearts and minds all week for worship on Sunday. No matter what you may think your commitment level is currently, this is an eye-opening and challenging book

He's Growing Up too Fast
But it is inevitable that he will leave home. I'm proud of the young man he has grown into and continues to grow. Not every mother of a 15-year-old son can say that he is a remarkable young man. David is remarkable and has a very good head on his shoulders. He has a faith that is unshakeable and will share his faith with others. He stands firm in the things in which he believes. He's an encourager, a friend, a servant and so much more. I am proud very proud of him!

A Valentines Poem
my dog's name is Blue
and I'm so lucky
to have a sweet thang like you.
Yore hair is like cornsilk
a-flapping in the breeze.
Softer than Blue's
and without all them fleas.
You move like the bass,
which excite me in May.
You ain't got no scales
but I luv you anyway.
Yo're as satisfy'n as okry
jist a-fry'n in the pan.
Yo're as fragrant as "snuff"
right out of the can.
You have some'a yore teeth,
for which I am proud;
I hold my head high
when we're in a crowd.
On special occasions,
when you shave under yore arms,
well, I'm in hawg heaven,
and awed by yore charms.
Still them fellers at work,
they all want to know,
what I did to deserve
such a purdy, young doe.
Like a good roll of duct tape
yo're there fer yore man,
to patch up life's troubles
and fix what you can.
Yo're as cute as a junebug
a-buzzin' overhead.
You ain't mean like those far ants
I found in my bed.
Cut from the best cloth
like a plaid flannel shirt,
you spark up my life
more than a fresh load of dirt.
When you hold me real tight
like a padded gunrack,
my life is complete;
Ain't nuttin' I lack.
Yore complexion, it's perfection,
like the best vinyl sidin'.
despite all the years,
yore age, it keeps hidin'.
Me 'n' you's like a Moon Pie
with a RC cold drank,
we go together
like a skunk goes with stank.
Some men, they buy chocolate
for Valentine's Day;
They git it at Wal-Mart,
it's romantic that way.
Some men git roses
on that special day
from the cooler at Kroger.
"That's impressive," I say.
Some men buy fine diamonds
from a flea market booth.
"Diamonds are forever,"
they explain, suave and couth.
But for this man, honey,
these won't do.
Cause yor'e too special,
you sweet thang you.
I got you a gift,
without taste nor odor,
more useful than diamonds...
IT'S A NEW BOAT 'N MOTOR!!
